Islam is believed to have begun in Comoros with the construction of the first stone mosques in Chingoni, Mayotte, Sima, Anjouan and Moroni, Ngazidja.

The tranquil atmosphere of the Comorian culture is dependent on Islam. Islam (Sunni Shafi’i) is the religion practiced by almost all Comorians. The following of, and belief in this religion contributes to Comoros being a tolerant and peaceful Islamic Nation.

The religion is very influential in the daily life of nearly every Comorian who respect the five pillars of Islam, though there are still some less complex pre-Islamic traditions of African origin, which can still be seen and are reminiscent to those of the peoples of East Africa.
